Manufacturing Process of DB6 Steel
- Melting and Refining
The manufacturing process begins in either an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) or an Induction Furnace, where raw materials are melted to create the base alloy. - Vacuum Degassing (VD): The molten steel is refined and fully killed to remove impurities, minimize gases, and ensure metallurgical cleanliness.
- Ladle Refining (LRF): Specific amounts of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and vanadium are added to fine-tune the chemical composition.
- Forging
To ensure internal soundness and favorable grain flow, the steel ingots undergo heavy mechanical hot forging. - Reduction Ratio: The ingots are subjected to hammer or press forging with a reduction ratio of 3.5 to 4.5 times.
- Upsetting: The material may be cross-forged (upset) multiple times to maintain structural integrity and remove directional weaknesses.
- Cooling: Following forging, the steel must be cooled slowly in a furnace or in vermiculite to prevent cracking.
- Annealing
After forging, the steel is annealed to soften it, which optimizes its machinability before secondary manufacturing. - The metal is soaked at 740°C–760°C, furnace-cooled at a slow rate of 10°C per hour down to 600°C, and then allowed to cool in the air.
- Heat Treatment (Hardening & Tempering)
To achieve the exact mechanical properties required for tooling and dies, the forged blocks undergo a strict heat treatment cycle: - Preheating: Gradually heated to 600°C–700°C before rapidly raising the temperature.
- Hardening (Austenitizing): Heated to 900°C–950°C and soaked until the microstructure completely transforms.
- Quenching: The steel is rapidly cooled using an oil or air quenching medium to lock in the hardness.
- Double Tempering: To relieve internal stress and achieve the desired balance of hardness and toughness, the steel is double-tempered, usually between 400°C and 650°C.
- Final Machining
Once the raw block is properly heat-treated, it undergoes stress-relieving at 600°C–650°C if heavy machining is required. Afterward, it is finish-machined into its final operational form, such as closed-die forging dies or injection molds.
